Lesson 4 - First Comparison

Here the matching up of my drawings to Prestons and I think I did pretty good for my first attempt.
I used the guide John K left on his blog with the guide in the Preston Blair book
which was to start of measuring the height of the drawing using the size of the head as a scale.
Then drawing the line of action and adding the shapes. Then afterwards adding the detail.

I'll make some notes on the drawings and then attempt to draw it again

Lesson 4 - Part 2

Continuing with Lesson 4
Heres the next image
Next, to compare these drawings to the actual images

Lesson 4 - Part 1

Heres my attempt of drawing the bunny from the Preston Blair book
I think this drawing is more cleaner compared to previous drawings.
Next I'll draw the duck and compare to the actual image for redrawing

Tom Cat

Had a go at constructing Tom using a skeleton method
I don't like it
So Im going onto using line of action and shapes

Preston Blair

Still continuing with these Preston Blair exercises. John K doesn't cover this page or the skeleton page on his blog but I'm still going to do it anyway.
Anyway heres the next page of images I've drawn, finally moving on from drawing just a characters head.
This will be the last time I draw on both sides of a sheet of paper that I plan on scanning in.

Lesson 3 - Part 3

Continuing where I left off yesterday with matching my drawings to the originals

Monday, 25 July 2011

Lesson 3 - Part 2

Having to keep redrawing the same picture over and over again until you get it right is really irritating and frustrating.
Im not sure how many I need to do but thinking about redoing all the lessons just to have them match up to the original photos is really off putting.
So I may just pick a certain amount and leave some

Lesson 3 - Check your copies

Here is my red copy against the image in the Preston Blair book
I got sick of redrawing another egg image when I was so close to having my image on target
So I rubbed out and tried to correct my mistake
I really need to work on my clean-up

Toy Construction 2 - Jinks

Still following John K's Cartoon College guide and to help with learning construction
I drew another set of cartoon toy heads from different angles

I think I need to remember to draw slowly at first so I concentrate more on getting the proportions right

But it was good that I did the Top Cat drawings first because that was simpler shapes and had less detail than this toy.
Next is to work on full characters (not just the heads) and Line of Action and comparing my previous drawings to the actual drawings and correct mistakes

Toy Construction Lesson 1

Here are my drawings for the toy construction exercise.
I posted part of page one on my previous post but here are the updates

I have a feeling that when I come to compare these to the photos
they are going to be miles apart

Toy Construction - Quick Attempt

I had my first attempt at doing toy construction
Before I posted this, I compared it to the original picture and it is off
so at some point i'll redo this

Lesson 2 Completed

Lesson Two was all about 'Stretch and Squash On Heads' Basically I had the character 'meathead' when he is smiling, sad or angry which will stretch the jaw but the cranium will stay the same size.

End of Lesson 1

I finally finished Lesson 1 and I know I am improving
Heres my Progress

More of Lesson 1

Here are the last two heads I had to do angle turn arounds
There are errors in the drawings that I will correct and re-draw including the other heads I have drawn.

I think using the perspective lines are really helping my drawings
to get the right angle and size for things like character ears

Barney Bear

Heres another page of my drawings of Barney Bear from all angles using the guide in the book.
I noticed on someone else's blog that they but in perspective lines in the drawings which I hadn't done. So from now on thats what im including.

Back - Page 1 again

I decided to start the Preston Blair book again since I hadn't done it in a while

Here are the first set of heads that had to be put into many different positions

Here are the next set of heads

Doing these is hard because you have to think of what is seen at a certain angle and the perspective. I'll continue doing the rest of these heads then probably redo some and then keep comparing my copies to Preston Blairs copies
Looks like I'll be on the first page of the book for a while

Lesson 1 - Construction Part 1

Here are my first drawings of the Construction of the head in the Preston Blair book.
Need to learn the fundamentals of drawing for animation before starting my animation course at university. So this book and John K's cartoon college guides will help alot
